Cupertino, June 4, 2025 – Apple is expected to introduce 120Hz displays to its non-Pro iPhones for the first time with the upcoming iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air, according to a new leak from Chinese tipster Fixed Focal Digital on Weibo. However, these displays may lack ProMotion, Apple’s adaptive refresh rate technology, which remains exclusive to the Pro models.
120Hz Without ProMotion: What It Means
Until now, all of Apple’s 120Hz displays have featured ProMotion, which dynamically adjusts the refresh rate between as low as 1Hz and as high as 120Hz depending on user activity. This technology enhances the user experience with smoother scrolling and animations while conserving battery life — especially useful for features like Always-On Display (AoD) and high-frame-rate content such as gaming.
In contrast, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air are reportedly equipped with standard 120Hz panels that lack ProMotion’s adaptive capabilities. This means the displays could shift between fixed refresh rates such as 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz, but without the seamless transitions and power-saving benefits provided by LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) technology.
What This Means for Users
The absence of ProMotion could result in slightly less fluid animations and lower power efficiency compared to the Pro models. Additionally, it remains unclear whether the non-Pro models will support Always-On Display, a feature previously exclusive to Pro iPhones due to ProMotion support.
Nonetheless, the inclusion of any 120Hz panel marks a significant upgrade for Apple’s non-Pro lineup, delivering smoother visuals compared to the traditional 60Hz displays found in previous base models.
