Rising from the Ashes: Devi Raghuvanshi on Mohini the Phoenix
What does it take to rebuild a life after devastating loss? Can personal tragedy become the foundation for courage, purpose, and meaningful change?
In Mohini the Phoenix, author Devi Raghuvanshi explores these questions through the journey of Charulata Singh Rathore, a woman whose privileged upbringing, academic brilliance, and promising future are shattered by tragedy and violence. Yet, rather than allowing adversity to define her, Charulata transforms her pain into determination, emerging as a fearless crusader for women whose voices have been silenced.
Set against the backdrop of university life, social tensions, and the pursuit of justice, the novel explores resilience, betrayal, sacrifice, and redemption. Its central character embodies the symbolism of the mythical Phoenix: the ability to rise from the ashes of destruction and emerge stronger than before.
For Raghuvanshi, the story is ultimately about the human capacity to rebuild after life’s deepest wounds. Through Mohini’s transformation, readers are invited to reflect on the difference between being shaped by adversity and being defined by it.
In this interview, the author discusses the inspiration behind the novel, his creative process, the development of its characters, and the timeless emotional themes that connect stories with readers across generations.
An Interview with Devi Raghuvanshi
1. What inspired you to write Mohini the Phoenix, and how did the idea for the story come to you?
Mohini the Phoenix was born from my fascination with the human capacity to rise after being broken by life. I wanted to create a woman whose journey through love, pain, resilience, and transformation mirrors the mythical Phoenix—rising from her own ashes stronger than before.
2. Can you share some insights into your writing process? Do you follow a particular routine or creative approach?
I allowed Mohini to lead me rather than forcing her into a predetermined mould. I spent time understanding her emotions, vulnerabilities, and inner strength, allowing her story to unfold organically through observation, imagination, and instinct.
3. The characters in your book are distinct and memorable. Are they based on real people, or do they emerge purely from your imagination?
My characters are fictional, although real people, emotions, and situations I have observed often provide subtle inspiration. Mohini, however, evolved through my imagination, shaped by the emotional journey and transformation I wanted her to experience.
4. Your book explores resilience, betrayal, and personal transformation. What motivated you to explore these themes, and what message do you hope readers will take away?
At its heart, Mohini the Phoenix is about resilience—the courage to rebuild yourself after life’s deepest wounds. I hope readers take away the belief that circumstances may break us, but they do not have to define who we become.
5. How did you approach creating the setting and world of your novel?
I wanted Mohini’s world to feel authentic and immersive, allowing readers to experience her journey rather than simply observe it. Real-life social environments and human behaviour provided the foundation, while imagination shaped the world in which her transformation unfolds.
6. How do you balance originality with the expectations of your genre?
Love, pain, betrayal, sacrifice, and redemption are timeless human experiences. My approach was to explore these familiar emotions through Mohini’s unique perspective, giving her journey its own voice, depth, and identity.
7. How do you maintain tension and momentum throughout the story?
For me, the emotional journey is as important as the external action. Every setback, choice, and revelation in Mohini’s journey is intended to move her closer to her transformation, keeping the story emotionally engaging from beginning to end.
8. How do you see traditional storytelling evolving in today’s rapidly changing media environment?
Technology may change how stories are consumed, but human emotions remain timeless. I try to combine the depth of traditional storytelling with contemporary perspectives, creating characters like Mohini who can connect with readers across generations.
