World Lion Day Celebrated in Amreli District: Students Hold Rally Wearing Lion Masks

Amreli district marked World Lion Day (August 10) with great enthusiasm, highlighting Gujarat’s pride as the only home to Asiatic lions in the world. Various programs were organized to raise awareness about lion conservation, especially in the Gir forest region and its surrounding areas. In Bagasara and nearby talukas, several schools held special events to commemorate the day.

Students Participate in Awareness Rally
Students from different schools took part in a public awareness rally, wearing lion masks to symbolize the significance of protecting the species. The rally aimed to spread the message of wildlife conservation among locals and encourage active participation in protecting the Asiatic lion’s habitat.

Remarkable Growth in Lion Population
Due to positive conservation policies and the collective efforts of locals and the forest department, the Asiatic lion population has seen a remarkable rise. In 1990, Gujarat recorded 284 lions, which has now increased to an estimated 891 in 2025. With the rise in numbers, their natural habitat has also expanded significantly.

Today, Asiatic lions roam freely across 11 districts of Saurashtra, within the Asiatic Lion Landscape. Since 2016, World Lion Day has been celebrated annually in Gujarat with the active participation of students, teachers, officials, local representatives, NGOs, nature enthusiasts, and villagers, reinforcing the message of conservation and coexistence.
