President of the United States Donald Trump has issued a warning that America might impose higher tariffs on imports from India if the Indian government fails to help regarding the issue of Russian oil. The day before yesterday, Trump was talking to the press and he speculated on the issue by mentioning Indian Prime Minister Modi and calling him a “good guy” but then went on to say that he didn’t like India’s dealings with Russia regarding oil. According to Trump, the US could impose the tariffs on India at lightning speed, and he pointed to the previous decision to raise the tariffs to 50% in August 2025 for the same concern. He went on to say that the warning is right after the US has taken a hard stance against India and has even come out openly opposing India’s purchase of Russian oil. The discussion of oil as a key factor was also part of the briefing on US actions after the seizure of the Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. The president’s statement comes when India and the US are in talks over trade. Not long ago, Trump claimed that PM Modi promised that India would no longer buy Russian oil, which the Indian government denied. India has been arguing that its oil imports depend on the market conditions and domestic needs. Trump’s latest remarks may have the potential to escalate the tensions in India-US relations that have been simmering under the surface.
