Surat: Young shooter Smit Mordiya from Surat delivered an outstanding performance at the World University Shooting Championship held recently in Delhi. He secured a silver medal in the individual category and a gold medal in the team event. With this achievement, Smit has become the first international shooting champion from Surat to accomplish such a feat.

A Mother’s Sacrifice Behind the Victory

Belonging to a middle-class family, Smit’s journey was far from easy. He started his shooting career three years ago, overcoming numerous challenges to pursue his dreams. His mother made the ultimate sacrifice by pawning her jewelry to buy him a rifle, which played a crucial role in his success. However, she has yet to reclaim her jewelry.

A Tale of Struggle and Triumph

Smit shared that during his school days, he had little interest in academics and even failed his 10th-grade exams. While his father suggested he take up a job, his mother and sister encouraged him to explore his potential. Inspired by their support, Smit stepped into the world of shooting. Balancing his studies and sports, he later cleared both his 10th and 12th-grade exams during college.

Overcoming Financial Challenges

Smit’s parents struggled financially to support his passion. His mother is a teacher at a government school, while his father works in the construction sector. Despite their modest means, they stood firmly by their son’s aspirations. Smit traveled 100 kilometers from Surat to Vyara for his shooting training and proved himself despite limited resources.

Dreaming of the Olympics

Smit now aims to represent India in the 2028 Olympics. He said, “Participating in the championship in Delhi gave me valuable international exposure. Defeating two Olympians in the finals boosted my confidence. My dream is to bring glory to India by competing in the Olympics.”

Support and Faith of His Coach

Smit’s coach, Sagar Ukhar, praised his dedication and confidence, saying, “Smit’s self-belief sets him apart from others. He sets his goals and achieves them within the timeline he decides. I am confident he will participate in the 2028 Olympics and win a medal.”

An Inspiration for All

Smit’s success story is not only a testament to his personal struggle but also an inspiration for young people everywhere. His journey proves that with hard work and dedication, no obstacle can stand in the way of success.
