Russia Launches Devastating Drone and Missile Attack on Kyiv; Zelensky to Speak with Trump Amid Crisis
In a major escalation of the Ukraine-Russia conflict, Russia launched a massive drone and missile assault on Kyiv, just days after a phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. The strike caused widespread destruction, with buildings reduced to rubble and cars blown into the air by the blasts.
Over 540 Drones and 11 Missiles Fired at Kyiv
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 540 drones and 11 ballistic missiles targeting the capital. At least 23 civilians were injured, and fires erupted in several residential neighborhoods. A key railway station sustained damage, and local authorities reported that air raid sirens sounded throughout the night to alert residents. While lives were saved thanks to swift warnings, significant infrastructure damage was reported.
Ukraine Intercepts 450 Drones Mid-Air
Despite the scale of the assault, Ukrainian defense systems successfully intercepted over 450 drones mid-flight. Missile attacks were recorded at eight different sites across the country. In a separate incident, Russian shelling in Pokrovsk, eastern Ukraine, left five people dead late Thursday night. Damage to Kyiv’s railway network also forced several trains to reroute.
Kyiv Was the Primary Target
According to Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko, Russia specifically targeted the capital with the intent of weakening Ukraine’s central infrastructure. Videos circulating online show terrified civilians running for cover, with emergency services battling fires and rescuing survivors throughout the city.
Zelensky to Speak with Trump on Monday
The attack comes in the wake of a high-stakes phone call between Trump and Putin, during which Putin reportedly stated, “We will complete our mission in Ukraine but are open to ceasefire discussions.” In response, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Russia’s stance.
Meanwhile, the U.S. decision to halt arms supplies to Ukraine has raised serious concerns. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is now set to hold crucial talks with Trump on Monday, urging continued support for Ukraine’s defense amid growing pressure.
