New Sonamarg Tunnel Set to Revolutionize Connectivity and Tourism in J&K
In a major development for Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sonamarg Tunnel, a vital infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity in the region. The 12-kilometer long tunnel, built at a cost exceeding Rs 2,700 crore, comprises a 6.4-kilometer main tunnel, an egress tunnel, and crucial approach roads.
Strategically located at an altitude of 8,650 feet above sea level, the Sonamarg Tunnel will provide all-weather access between Srinagar and Sonamarg, ensuring smoother and safer travel to the Ladakh region. The tunnel bypasses dangerous landslide and avalanche-prone routes, making it a crucial link for the area.
The inauguration also comes as a boost for tourism. The new tunnel is set to transform Sonamarg into a year-round tourist destination, offering opportunities for winter tourism, adventure sports, and enhanced livelihoods for local communities.
