Gandhinagar, July 1, 2025: With the diamond industry facing one of the worst recessions in five decades, the Gujarat government is preparing to take swift action to support diamond workers and artisans. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has assured stakeholders that a concrete action plan will be introduced within two days to address the ongoing crisis.

A delegation comprising office-bearers from various diamond associations across Gujarat, including Surat, Saurashtra, Ahmedabad, and North Gujarat, met with the CM to discuss the economic challenges affecting thousands of diamond polishers and craftsmen.

“We are fully committed to helping the diamond workforce. A structured support plan will be announced in the next 48 hours,” said Chief Minister Patel during the meeting.

Worst Recession in 50 Years
Surat is globally renowned for its diamond industry, with 9 out of every 10 polished diamonds worldwide processed in the city. Significant polishing and cutting work also takes place in Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, and other cities in Saurashtra and North Gujarat.

However, the sector has been struggling with a severe slowdown for the past two and a half years, leaving many artisans in dire financial conditions. This marks the longest and most widespread recession in the history of Gujarat’s diamond industry.

High-Level Meeting with Key Industry Leaders
Tuesday’s meeting was attended by several key figures including:

Praful Panseriya, Gujarat Education Minister

Dinesh Navadia, Chairman, Indian Diamond Institute

Ishwar Prajapati, President, Visnagar Diamond Association

Narsinh Kanani, President, Ahmedabad Diamond Association

Vijay Patel, President, Junagadh Diamond Association

Ghanshyam Gorsiya, President, Bhavnagar Diamond Association

Jaysukh Koldiya, President, Ahmedabad Association

Industry representatives submitted a list of concerns and proposals for immediate government intervention to protect jobs and stabilize operations.
