Fifty-five Indian ophthalmologists among the top 2% of researchers globally

New Delhi, [India], September 21, 2024: Dr. Santosh G. Honavar and Dr. Gullapalli N. Rao, two eminent ophthalmologists from Hyderabad, have secured top positions in the prestigious 2024 Stanford List of Researchers in Ophthalmology for India. Dr. Honavar, Honorary Secretary of the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) and Director of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery and Ocular Oncology at Centre for Sight Eye Hospital, Hyderabad, has claimed the top spot for the fourth consecutive year. Dr. Rao, Founder-Chairman of LV Prasad Eye Institute, leads the list for career-long impact.

Global Recognition for Indian Ophthalmologists

A total of 55 Indian ophthalmologists have made it to the top 2% of researchers worldwide, based on their impact in 2023. Of these, 27 were recognized for their career-long contributions to ophthalmology. Dr. Honavar, an expert in eye cancers, has received numerous accolades, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He ranks second globally in career-long impact, with over 15,000 citations and an H-index of 66.

Dr. Rao’s Lifelong Impact on Global Ophthalmology

Dr. Gullapalli N. Rao, a pioneer in the prevention of blindness, leads the Stanford List for his career-long contributions to ophthalmology. He has been honored with the Padma Shri and inducted into the Ophthalmology Hall of Fame by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

The All India Ophthalmological Society, the world’s second-largest ophthalmological organization with over 26,000 members, continues to play a vital role in promoting research through its Vision 2030 strategy.
