The Delhi Legislative Assembly has approved the installation of portraits of Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya within its premises. The decision was made by the General Purposes Committee, chaired by Speaker Vijender Gupta, recognizing their significant contributions to India’s freedom struggle, social reform, and educational development.
The proposal was submitted by BJP MLA Abhay Verma, who emphasized that these leaders played transformative roles in shaping India’s moral, cultural, and intellectual foundations.
However, the move has sparked political contention. AAP leader Atishi claimed that her party had proposed the installation of a portrait of social reformer Savitribai Phule, but alleged that the BJP blocked the initiative. The Assembly countered that no written proposal had been submitted by AAP MLAs regarding this matter.
