ITR Deadline Extended: There’s good news and major relief for taxpayers. The Income Tax Department has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26). The due date has been pushed from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025. This decision comes after delays in issuing the ITR forms. The announcement was made via a post by the Income Tax Department on X (formerly Twitter).

What was announced?
According to the post:
“Attention taxpayers! The CBDT has extended the due date for filing ITR to September 15, 2025. Earlier, the deadline was July 31, 2025. This extension is due to significant updates in ITR forms, system development requirements, and TDS credit reflections. The goal is to ensure a smoother and more accurate filing experience. An official notification will follow.”

It’s important to note that the July 31 deadline primarily applies to individual taxpayers such as salaried employees and others not requiring an audit. With this extension, these taxpayers get an extra 46 days to file their returns. However, if the ITR is not filed by the extended deadline, a penalty of up to ₹5,000 may be levied.
