Wi-SUN Challenge Concludes with Groundbreaking Innovations for Smart Cities

Hyderabad, 27th September 2024: The Wi-SUN Challenge, organized by the Smart City Living Lab in collaboration with Silicon Labs, concluded successfully, unveiling groundbreaking IoT-enabled solutions for smart cities, utilities, and healthcare. The competition attracted 266 submissions from innovators, startups, and academic institutions, with 10 finalist teams selected to present scalable prototypes using Wi-SUN RF mesh technology.

The finalists, including six SMEs and four student teams, showcased innovative projects such as smart dustbins, air quality monitors, solar tracking systems, real-time water quality solutions, and more. Their prototypes were built and tested using low-power leaf node (LFN) hardware, Wi-SUN networks, and platforms like Simplicity Studio from Silicon Labs and IIIT-H’s City IoT Operating Platform (ctOP).

DBR Innovative Tech from Vijayawada, with their agricultural IoT solution “Farmer Voice,” won the top prize. Team Horus from Nitte Meenakshi College of Engineering took second place for their solar panel maintenance solution, while Yantram Electronics secured third place with their wireless metering system.

The event, judged by industry experts like Lopa Mishra Jana (CEO, TiHAN at IIT Hyderabad) and Mallikarjun Reddy (VP, IoT of Blaze Automation), emphasized the transformative potential of Wi-SUN technology for smart cities.

Silicon Labs spokesperson Srinivasa Dukkipati highlighted the event’s role in showcasing innovative approaches to real-world challenges, while Anuradha Vattem, Chief Technology Architect at IIIT Hyderabad Smart City Living Lab, praised the collaboration between academia and industry in driving meaningful change.

The Wi-SUN Challenge stands as a testament to how technology and innovation can address the demands of urbanization and smart infrastructure, inspiring future generations of innovators.
