Caught between society’s expectations and his true passions, Arjun dares to break free from the middle-class mold. The Middle-Class Phoenix is a witty, heartfelt journey of rebellion, self-discovery, and rising from the ashes to live life on one’s own terms.
- What inspired this novel and how did the idea originate?
The story is deeply rooted in real events—my own life and experiences of people around me. I felt a strong urge to share this distinct narrative with the world, and that desire sparked the creation of The Middle-Class Phoenix. - Can you describe your writing routine or process?
I believe writing requires discipline to bridge the gap between imagination and execution. I usually write early in the morning, before the distractions of daily life set in. That’s when my creative flow is at its best. - Are the characters in the novel based on real people?
The characters are inspired by real individuals, but none are exact replicas. They’re a blend of traits from various people, shaped further by my imagination. - What key theme does the book explore, and what message do you hope readers take away?
While many novels explore life in engineering colleges, I wanted to highlight a different educational journey—one that exposes students to social issues. I hope readers laugh with the story but also reflect on the underlying social challenges it portrays. - How did you build the vivid world in the novel? Did real-life places influence it?
Absolutely. Having studied at Delhi University and TISS, I drew from those experiences to create immersive and realistic settings. These places, which I’ve personally lived through, provided the texture and detail in the novel. - How do you balance originality with reader expectations in storytelling?
I don’t follow formulaic patterns. To me, a good story told in a compelling way is enough. The challenge lies in deciding which sub-stories to retain and which to trim to maintain the narrative flow. - How do you maintain momentum and engagement in your story?
I structured the book into short, titled chapters, each delivering a complete mini-story. This approach offers readers a sense of closure while keeping them eager for what’s next. - In an era of shifting media consumption, how do you adapt your writing to connect with modern readers?
Storytelling is under pressure like never before. Social media has fragmented attention spans, making it harder to get readers to open a book. But once they do, a well-told story still works its magic. As a millennial, I naturally blend generational perspectives, making my anecdotes relatable across age groups.
