Murshidabad Erupts in Violence During Protest Against Waqf Bill; Vehicles Set Ablaze, Stones Pelted

Murshidabad, April 7, 2025 – A protest against the Waqf Amendment Bill in West Bengal’s Murshidabad turned violent on Monday as agitators resorted to stone-pelting and arson, setting multiple vehicles on fire and clashing with police forces.

The agitation, which began peacefully, escalated when protestors blocked roads and began throwing stones. Several vehicles, including private and police vehicles, were torched. The area witnessed chaos as shops shut down and locals fled for safety.

Why the Protest?

Protesters claim that the Waqf Amendment Bill undermines the autonomy of Muslim religious trusts and endangers community-owned properties. The bill has already been challenged in the Supreme Court, with several petitions questioning its constitutional validity.

Police Response:

Police used batons and tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and regain control. Several individuals were detained for inciting violence. The administration has deployed additional security forces, and internet services have been temporarily suspended in sensitive areas to curb misinformation and prevent further escalation.
