Dhaka, July 21, 2025: A tragic aviation disaster unfolded in Dhaka on Sunday when a Bangladesh Air Force F-7 BGI training aircraft crashed into a college and school campus shortly after taking off from the Kurmitola airbase. The jet, on a routine training mission, reportedly suffered a mechanical failure mid-flight.
According to official sources, the crash claimed the lives of at least 27 people, including the pilot. Another 88 individuals, many of them school children, sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals across the city.
Eyewitness videos captured the horrifying aftermath, with thick black smoke billowing from the wreckage and flames engulfing parts of the school buildings. The impact not only destroyed multiple structures on the campus but also triggered a massive fire that took hours to control.
Emergency response teams, including firefighters and military personnel, were quick to arrive at the scene. Rescue operations continued into the evening, as authorities searched for survivors trapped in the debris.
Interim Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus issued a heartfelt video statement, expressing deep sorrow over the incident. “This is a national tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring justice and accountability,” he said.
The Bangladesh Air Force has formed a high-level military committee to investigate the cause of the mechanical failure. Initial reports suggest that the pilot made a last-ditch effort to avoid densely populated areas, potentially preventing an even greater disaster.
This incident comes just weeks after a major Air India crash, intensifying concerns about aviation safety in the South Asian region. Authorities have pledged a thorough investigation and promised to provide full support to the victims’ families.
