ECI to Remove 5.1 Million Names from Bihar Voter List in Major Revision Drive
Patna, July 21, 2025: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a significant update from its ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign in Bihar, stating that over 51 lakh (5.1 million) names will be removed from the state’s voter rolls.
According to ECI data, 18 lakh voters were found to be deceased, yet their names remained in the list. Additionally, 26 lakh voters had shifted residences either outside Bihar or to different assembly constituencies within the state. The commission also identified 7 lakh individuals holding multiple voter IDs, a direct violation of electoral regulations.
This extensive cleanup aims to ensure that only eligible voters remain on the rolls, improving the accuracy and integrity of the electoral system.
Bihar currently has 7.89 crore registered voters, and the ECI reported that 97.30% have submitted their verification forms a prerequisite for inclusion in the preliminary electoral roll to be published on August 1, 2025. About 2.70% voters have yet to complete the submission process.
To carry out this revision, the Election Commission has mobilized over 98,500 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and 1.5 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs), emphasizing transparency and inclusivity throughout the campaign.
