जज़्बातों की झंकार [Jazbaaton Ki Jhankaar] is a heartfelt poetry collection that brings together emotions, observations, faith, nature, and the many experiences that shape human life. Through concise yet meaningful verses, author वासल देवेन्द्र (Vasal Devender) captures deep thoughts and emotions in a form that allows readers to reflect and connect in their own way.
Inspired by devotion to the Lord, the beauty of nature, human experiences, and the world around him, the author draws from a lifetime of observation and personal experiences. His poetry is also shaped by the literary influences of his childhood, including the works of Rahim and Kabir and the Urdu shayari he grew up listening to at home.
जज़्बातों की झंकार [Jazbaaton Ki Jhankaar] is a collection shaped by life, loss, reflection, and the continuous discovery of new passions. It presents poetry as a powerful medium through which a few carefully chosen words can hold a vast world of emotions and experiences.
1. What draws you to the medium of poetry, and how do you believe it offers a distinctive way to communicate emotions and ideas?
It is very simple. Poetry is the only medium through which one can convey a big and deep message or emotion in just a few words—“गागर में सागर भरना।” I have multiple thoughts within me, and poetry helps me express and share them.
2. Can you share the inspiration behind the theme of your poems, and how it influenced the tone and structure of them?
Primarily, it is my devotion to the Lord and His creation in the form of nature, including human beings, who exist in different varieties. I constantly observe what exists in the universe, in whatever form it may be. These observations become the inspiration behind many of my poems.
3. Poetry often invites readers to interpret and connect on a personal level. How do you navigate the balance between conveying your intended meaning and leaving room for individual interpretation?
A poet has a very big heart. Since poetry conveys a lot in just a few words, there is naturally room and opportunity for individual interpretation. However, the poet chooses his words carefully and cleverly to ensure that no interpretation negates the basic message.
4. Can you describe your approach to crafting the musicality of your language, and how it contributes to the overall experience for readers?
The truth is that every person on earth has been gifted with some special skill by the Lord. I believe that God has gifted me with this ability.
I am a voracious reader. I read all kinds of books, and I try to retain what I read. When these different thoughts come together and are reproduced, they take different forms. They perhaps take the shape of poetry, or sometimes a lecture to be delivered somewhere.
The readers can feel a capsule of emotions and experiences in my poetry.
5. Many poets draw inspiration from their own experiences. How does your personal journey and background influence the themes and imagery in your poetry?
The seeds for this were sown in my childhood. My mother used to teach me the poetry of Rahim and Kabir, with their deep meanings. My father and elder brother used to write and recite a lot of Urdu shayari.
These experiences, coupled with my own interest, have helped shape my writing, which naturally comes out through my pen.
6. In your work, how do you use poetry as a means of commentary or reflection on the world around you?
Well, this is very simple. I write almost one poem every day. Every Sunday, I share one of my poems with my circle and on social platforms.
Every day is a new day, and every week is a bundle of those different days. On Sundays, I share a poem based on something that was different or meaningful in the week that has gone by.
7. Readers may be curious about your writing rituals. Can you share any specific routines or practices you find helpful in cultivating your creativity and honing your craft as a poet?
Yes. I started learning the flute at the age of 60+. Now I play the flute on different occasions. I started running at the age of 64+ and have won more than 18 medals and two trophies in recent years, including races of 21.1 kilometres (half marathons).
I started going to the gym at the age of 68+, and I now go to the gym three days a week, with each session lasting about 90 minutes. I also run three days a week.
Basically, I am a lawyer. I headed the Legal Department of Standard Chartered Bank and Vedanta plc. Besides this, I was a Senior Partner at DSK Legal, one of the leading law firms.
I started writing at the age of 65, during COVID.
Some of my poems also reflect the pain of losing my young son at the age of 38 in recent times.
All these experiences have contributed to and continue to influence what I write.
