Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi participated in the 16th BRICS Summit, held under Russia’s Chairmanship in Kazan. The summit brought together leaders from BRICS nations to discuss a wide range of global issues.

Key Discussions at the BRICS Summit

The BRICS leaders engaged in productive discussions on strengthening multilateralism, countering terrorism, fostering economic growth, pursuing sustainable development, and addressing the concerns of the Global South. In a significant move, 13 new partner countries were welcomed into the BRICS fold.

Prime Minister’s Address at the BRICS Summit

Prime Minister Modi addressed two important sessions during the summit. In his speech, he emphasized that the summit is taking place amidst global uncertainties such as conflicts, adverse climate impacts, and cyber threats. These challenges, according to him, place greater expectations on BRICS to act decisively. He urged BRICS to adopt a people-centric approach to address these issues.

Call for a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism

PM Modi also underlined the need for the United Nations to adopt a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the earliest to effectively combat the menace of terrorism.

Push for Global Governance Reforms

The Prime Minister highlighted the need for BRICS to proactively push for global governance reforms. Referring to India’s hosting of the Voice of Global South Summits during its G-20 Presidency, he stressed the importance of prioritizing the concerns of the Global South. He also praised the regional presence of the New Development Bank in India’s GIFT city, which has contributed to new growth opportunities.

Focus on Economic Growth and SME Development

PM Modi stressed BRICS’ efforts to boost economic growth through trade facilitation in agriculture, resilient supply chains, e-commerce, and Special Economic Zones. He underscored the importance of prioritizing small and medium enterprises (SMEs). He also mentioned that India’s initiative to launch the BRICS Startup Forum this year would significantly enhance the group’s economic agenda.

India’s Green Initiatives and Invitation to BRICS

Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s recent green initiatives, including the International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, Mission LIFE, and the Green Credit initiative announced during COP28. He invited BRICS nations to join these initiatives for a sustainable future.

Conclusion of the Summit

PM Modi congratulated President Putin for successfully hosting the 16th BRICS Summit and extended his best wishes to Brazil, which will assume the presidency of BRICS next. At the summit’s conclusion, the leaders adopted the ‘Kazan Declaration’.
