LPG Gas Price Hike: ₹50 Increase to Impact Household Budgets – Check New Rates
After the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices, the Indian government has now increased the price of LPG gas cylinders as well. Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, announced a ₹50 hike in LPG prices. The new rates will be effective from April 8, 2025, and will apply to both subsidized and non-subsidized LPG cylinders.
A Major Blow to Middle and Lower-Income Families
For regular consumers, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder will rise from ₹803 to ₹853. Under the Ujjwala Yojana, the price will increase from ₹500 to ₹550 per cylinder. It’s important to note that LPG prices vary from state to state. For example, in Ahmedabad, the current price of a 14.2 kg cylinder is ₹800. With the new hike, consumers there will have to pay ₹850 starting tomorrow.
Minister Puri also mentioned that LPG prices will now be reviewed every 15 days and adjusted based on international market trends. Additionally, the excise duty on petrol and diesel has been increased by ₹2 per liter. However, oil marketing companies (OMCs) have been directed not to pass this burden on to consumers.
The government stated that the hike in excise duty is aimed at helping OMCs recover losses of approximately ₹43,000 crore incurred in the gas segment.
Previous Price Reductions Over the Past Two Years
Before this latest hike, the central government had reduced LPG prices twice in the last two years. On March 9, 2024, the price of domestic LPG was cut by ₹100. Prior to that, on August 30, 2023, there was a reduction of ₹200. At that time, the price of a domestic cylinder was lowered from ₹1,103 to ₹903.
