A recent survey revealed that only 60% of consumers actively check for BIS certification when purchasing electrical devices, highlighting the need for greater awareness, said Mr. Nirav Mandalewala, Honorary Secretary of the Chamber.

Surat: The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), organized an awareness session on “Ensuring Safety and Compliance” on October 22, 2024, at 5:30 PM at Sanghati, Sarasana, Surat. The session featured insights from Mr. Nikhil Raj, Joint Director of BIS Surat, and Mr. Dhanraj Karade, Deputy Director of BIS Surat, who provided detailed information on BIS regulations, standards, and precautions related to electrical products for industry entrepreneurs.

Mr. Nirav Mandalewala welcomed the attendees and emphasized that the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the national standards body of India, established to ensure that products meet necessary quality and safety benchmarks. He noted that non-compliance with BIS standards for electrical products could lead to serious consequences, including fire hazards, electric shocks, or equipment failures.

He further stated that over 30% of fire incidents in residential and commercial spaces in India in recent years have been caused by electrical short circuits, underscoring the critical need for adherence to safety standards. Currently, BIS certification is mandatory for over 200 electrical devices, ensuring that products meet the highest safety and performance standards. India exports electrical devices worth $8 billion annually, and compliance with BIS standards plays a crucial role in maintaining the country’s global reputation for quality products. A survey conducted by the Consumer Protection Authority found that only 60% of consumers actively check for BIS certification when purchasing electrical devices, indicating a need for increased awareness.

Mr. Nikhil Raj explained that all BIS products are developed by the Technical Divisional Council of BIS. More than 23,000 standards have been established by BIS, including product standards and methods of testing. Approximately 920 new standards were created in 2023-24, incorporating international standards as well. He provided information about various BIS certifications and the Quality Control Order.

He added that the Foreign Manufacturers Scheme includes products like cement, steel, wooden products, thermometers, and various textile products. BIS has also implemented a Laboratory Recognition Scheme, allowing other laboratories to test products.

Mr. Dhanraj Karade mentioned that there are two types of safety standards for electrical products: routine tests (conducted on each product) and type tests (conducted when there is a modification in the product or process). Safety is maintained through routine tests at home appliances and industrial sites. Routine tests include earth continuity tests, electrical strength tests, functional tests, and protection against electric shock, along with provisions for earthing. Most manufacturing companies use type tests. He also provided information about the marking fees for various products.

The session was attended by former Chamber President Mr. Dilip Chashmawala, chamber members, and industry entrepreneurs. Mr. Nainesh Pachigara, Chairman of the Chamber’s Bullion Committee, moderated the program. Mr. S.K. Singh, Senior Director and Head of BIS Surat Office, outlined the program. At the end, the speakers provided satisfactory answers to all the attendees’ questions. Mr. Pramod Bhagat, Chairman of the Chamber’s Retail Trade Committee, thanked everyone present, and the program concluded.
