The Winter Session of the Parliament began on Monday, but the very first day was marked by high drama and loud protests from the Opposition. As soon as the Lok Sabha proceedings started, several Opposition MPs rushed into the Well of the House, shouting slogans and raising objections. Due to the increasing chaos, Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House till noon. However, when the session resumed, the Opposition again created uproar, demanding the withdrawal of the SIR. With no signs of order returning, the Lok Sabha was adjourned again, this time for the entire day. Before the session started, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media for about 10 minutes. He urged the Opposition to rise above the disappointment of their electoral defeat and play a constructive role inside the House by raising strong issues. PM Modi said he was even willing to give them “tips” on how to protest effectively, if they wished. Taking a clear dig, he said certain political parties were unable to accept their defeat, especially those who still cannot move on from the election results in Bihar. He emphasized that Parliament should focus on “delivery, not drama,” and that this session should not become a battleground for frustration or arrogance. The Prime Minister also welcomed the new Rajya Sabha Chairman, C.P. Radhakrishnan. Reacting to PM Modi’s statement, the Congress said the PM’s remarks were mere pretense, claiming that the person who creates the most drama was lecturing others on the issue. When the Prime Minister addressed the Rajya Sabha to welcome the new Chairman, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge also delivered his remarks. During this, Kharge questioned the sudden resignation of former Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. He said it was unfortunate that the House did not get a chance to formally bid farewell to the former chairman. His comments were immediately countered by BJP President and Union Minister J.P. Nadda, who said Kharge seemed deeply troubled by Congress losses in Bihar, Haryana, and Maharashtra. Nadda sarcastically remarked that Kharge should consult a doctor if the pain of defeat was too much. Earlier, PM Modi had also said that India had proven that “democracy can deliver.” He expressed hope that the Winter Session would further energize the nation’s mission of building a developed India. The Prime Minister again appealed to the Opposition to leave behind the gloom of defeat and contribute meaningfully to national discussions. He said the session should not be overshadowed by disappointment or pride, and the younger generation must benefit from experienced discussions. Meanwhile, amidst the loud protests, the government introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha. These included the Manipur GST (Second Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Central Excise (Amendment) Bill, both tabled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman despite the chaos. She also introduced the National Security Cess Bill related to health security. The Winter Session will run from December 1 to December 19. During these 19 days, the government has planned discussions, bill introductions, and debates spanning 15 key legislative items.
