Opposition Boycotts Speaker’s Tea Party After Monsoon Session; PM Modi Criticizes Congress, Highlights Gandhi Family’s ‘Insecurity’

The Monsoon Session of the Indian Parliament may have officially ended, but political turbulence in the country shows no signs of calming. In a fresh turn of events, the Opposition parties boycotted a traditional tea party hosted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, signaling their discontent and continuing confrontation with the ruling government.

Opposition Boycotts Speaker’s Invitation

The Opposition, particularly the Indian National Congress and INDIA bloc allies, refused to attend the tea gathering following the conclusion of the session. Their reason: the government allegedly silenced their voices in Parliament and dismissed critical issues they intended to raise.

“We were denied the opportunity to speak. The government strategically avoided real discussions and converted Parliament into a one-way traffic platform,” a senior Opposition leader stated. According to them, several pressing matters, including the ongoing unrest in Manipur, inflation, unemployment, and the use of investigative agencies against political leaders, were consistently ignored.

PM Modi Fires Back

In response to the boycott and criticism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp attack on the Opposition, particularly the Congress party. In his statement, he claimed the Opposition had chosen to indulge in “disruption over discussion” and failed to participate in meaningful debates over important bills.

“The Opposition was more focused on creating a ruckus. They showed no interest in engaging with the legislative process,” said PM Modi. He emphasized that multiple crucial bills, which affect the lives of millions of Indians, were passed despite the absence of the Opposition during debates.

Congress Youth Leaders ‘Talented but Silenced’?

However, it was the Prime Minister’s comments on internal Congress dynamics that have stirred considerable conversation in political circles. Modi remarked that the Congress party possesses a number of “young, talented leaders” but suggested they are deliberately silenced due to insecurity within the Gandhi family.

“There are many capable young MPs in the Congress. But due to the insecurity of the Gandhi family, they are not allowed to speak freely,” Modi stated. He went a step further, implying that perhaps these very young leaders are the reason Rahul Gandhi himself feels insecure or anxious.

A Sharp Jibe or a Political Strategy?

The remarks are seen as both a critique of dynastic politics and a calculated move to sow internal doubts within the Congress camp. By praising young Congress leaders while criticizing the party’s top brass, particularly the Gandhis, PM Modi appears to be driving a wedge and attempting to appeal to Congress’s younger base.

The Congress, however, has not issued a direct response to the “insecurity” comment, though insiders claim that it’s another example of Modi’s attempt to distract from real issues such as inflation, rural distress, and institutional misuse.

Larger Questions on Parliamentary Democracy

This episode is reflective of the growing strain in Indian parliamentary democracy. The increasing lack of dialogue between the government and the Opposition, frequent disruptions, and the politicization of procedural platforms like the tea party indicate a deeper crisis of trust.

Observers have noted that symbolic events like the Speaker’s tea party are meant to build bridges and show civility despite political differences. A boycott of such a gesture hints at the collapse of those unwritten codes of conduct in Indian politics.
