Ahmedabad Flooded After Heavy Rainfall; Eastern Areas Resemble Flood Zones, Roads Submerged, Mithakhali Underpass Closed

Ahmedabad, July 27, 2025: Torrential rains lashed Ahmedabad city on Sunday, leading to severe waterlogging across multiple areas and bringing traffic and daily life to a standstill. The downpour, which began late Saturday night, caused extensive flooding, particularly in the eastern parts of the city, with roads resembling rivers and several localities reporting knee-deep water levels.

The Mithakhali underpass was shut down to vehicular traffic due to excessive water accumulation. Commuters and residents struggled to navigate through flooded streets, with many vehicles breaking down mid-way. Vatva, one of the worst-hit areas, received over 4 inches of rain, submerging streets and allowing rainwater to seep into homes, damaging household goods.

Residents of Narol, Ramol, and Hatkeshwar expressed frustration as their vehicles got stuck in waist-deep water. Locals criticized the city administration for inadequate drainage systems and called out the Smart City claims as hollow and ineffective. Similarly, people in Vasna and Odhav also faced hardships after around 3 inches of rain paralyzed routine life.

According to official reports, Ahmedabad district recorded 3.54 inches of rainfall between 6 AM and 10 AM. The breakdown by region includes Daskroi with 3.54 inches, Bavla with 2.9 inches, and Dholka with 1.57 inches.

Several prominent neighborhoods including Jodhpur, Satellite, Shivranjani, Vastrapur, Kalupur, Income Tax, Shahpur, Nikol, Ramol, Gomtipur, Rakhiyal, Maninagar, Lal Darwaza, Geeta Mandir, Wadaj, and Usmanpura recorded more than 2 inches of rainfall, further escalating the flood-like situation.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is currently working to drain water from key areas and restore normalcy, but residents demand long-term solutions to prevent such urban flooding in the future.
