Meta has introduced a new feature in WhatsApp that enables users to verify the authenticity of photos. Known as the ‘Image Search on Web’ feature, it allows users to check if an image is genuine, edited, or trustworthy. Currently, this feature is available in the beta version for Android.
How to Use the Feature
To use this feature, open the image you want to check. Then, click on the three-dot menu in the top right corner. Select the ‘Search on Web’ option from the menu. A pop-up window will appear with a ‘Search’ button—clicking it initiates a Google reverse image search. The image is sent to Google, where it will be searched online. Users will be informed if the image exists online and if it has been altered. Meta has assured that the images sent to Google will remain private, and even Meta itself will not be able to view them.
Importance of the Feature
In today’s era of artificial intelligence, many photos and videos, including deepfake videos of celebrities, circulate widely. These fake visuals often lead to scams or misinformation. This feature is highly useful as it helps users verify the authenticity of images, preventing the spread of false information on WhatsApp. Meta’s goal is to make it convenient for users by embedding this tool within WhatsApp, avoiding the need to use separate applications or upload images elsewhere.
Enhancing Trustworthiness
Digital platforms frequently experience the spread of misinformation. Having a tool to verify the credibility of information is essential for users. This feature will also discourage users from forwarding false information, as it enables them to check the credibility of the images they receive on WhatsApp.
Currently, this feature is available only for Android beta users, but once it is fully launched, it is expected to reduce the spread of misinformation. Meta designed this feature with user convenience and awareness in mind, helping users make informed decisions.
