A tragic incident unfolded at SVNIT Surat where Advait Nair, a third-year B.Tech Computer Science student from Kerala’s Karunagappally, died by suicide after jumping from the hostel building on the night of November 30. According to sources, the student had been under tremendous academic stress due to failing an exam recently. He had reportedly stopped attending the new semester classes and appeared withdrawn from academic activities. After the fall, he was found in a severely injured condition by fellow students and staff members. As they rushed him for treatment to a private hospital, Advait was repeatedly saying “let me die,” indicating the deep emotional distress he had been battling. The incident has triggered massive anger and protests on campus, with students holding the administration responsible for negligence in handling the emergency. Several eyewitnesses claimed that despite informing the authorities immediately, no ambulance arrived on time. Students allege that it took almost 30 minutes for an ambulance to reach the spot, a delay they believe critically impacted the chances of saving his life. According to the protesting students, an ambulance is usually stationed near the SVNIT campus canteen area. However, even the on-campus ambulance failed to respond promptly, adding to the frustration and sense of betrayal among students. The lack of urgent response has raised serious questions about the institute’s emergency protocols and preparedness for critical situations involving student safety. Hari Krishna Tiwari, one of the students present during the incident, said they were shouting for help and several students even picked up bicycles to rush and get assistance. With no help coming from the institute’s administration, the students themselves called an external ambulance in desperation. He added that during those intense moments, there was no quick action or immediate support from the SVNIT management, worsening the crisis. After the student’s death, hundreds of students gathered outside the administration building and staged a massive protest. They expressed strong anger against what they described as severe negligence by the institute in ensuring timely medical support. The demonstrators demanded immediate accountability and answers from the SVNIT administration regarding why the campus emergency system completely failed at such a crucial moment. The protestors emphasized that a delay of even a few minutes can cost a life, and in this case, a delay of nearly half an hour was unacceptable. The tragic incident has sparked a wider debate about student mental health, academic pressure, and the responsibility of educational institutions to provide a safe and supportive environment. Students are now demanding a complete review of the campus emergency response system, installation of more accessible ambulances, mental health support reforms, and strict action against those responsible for the alleged negligence. Many students also questioned why no counselor or immediate mental health intervention was provided earlier, despite signs that Advait had been stressed and absent from classes. The incident has raised serious concerns about safety standards and administrative accountability at one of Gujarat’s top engineering institutes. Students say they will continue their protest until the administration provides full clarity on what went wrong, why emergency help arrived late, and what steps will be taken to ensure such a tragedy never occurs again. They are demanding transparent communication, a written response from the authorities, and long-term reforms in medical readiness and student wellbeing.
