PM Modi to Visit UK and Maldives: Major Trade Deal and Diplomatic Meetings on the Agenda

New Delhi, July 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to embark on a four-day international visit next week, with planned stops in the United Kingdom and the Maldives. The visit is aimed at finalizing key trade agreements and strengthening diplomatic ties with both nations.

India-UK Free Trade Agreement to Be Signed on July 23–24
During his visit to the UK on July 23–24, Prime Minister Modi is expected to sign the long-awaited India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This historic deal is set to significantly boost bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

The agreement is expected to impact 99% of Indian exports to the UK, as it will lead to major reductions in tariffs. It will also support the export of British goods such as whiskey and automobiles to India. This FTA comes after nearly three years of negotiations, with the goal of improving market access and creating a business-friendly environment between the two countries.

Beyond trade, the deal is likely to deepen security cooperation, providing a new direction for strategic collaboration between India and the UK.

Maldives Visit on July 25–26: Rebuilding Regional Trust
Following the UK leg, PM Modi will travel to the Maldives on July 25–26, where he will attend the island nation’s 60th National Day celebrations as the chief guest. This visit will mark his first official meeting with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, who came to power amid rising anti-India sentiment fueled by the “India Out” campaign.

Given the recent tensions between the two nations, this visit is seen as a significant step toward rebuilding trust, reestablishing bilateral cooperation, and reinforcing India’s strategic presence in the Indian Ocean region.

Possible Visit to China in August
There are also indications that Prime Minister Modi may visit China next month to attend the 25th International Summit, proposed to be held in Tianjin in August. While not yet officially confirmed, such a visit would highlight India’s willingness to engage diplomatically with regional powers.
