EV Battle 2025: MG Windsor EV Overtakes Tata, Punch and Tiago Still in Top Five
India’s electric vehicle (EV) industry is evolving rapidly, with automakers competing aggressively to attract a growing base of eco-conscious buyers. The year 2025 proved to be a turning point, highlighting the fierce battle between MG Motor and Tata Motors. Interestingly, every car in the top five bestselling EVs this year came from these two brands, underlining their dominance in the Indian EV landscape.

The biggest headline was the MG Windsor EV, which dethroned Tata’s Nexon EV to claim the number-one position in its debut year. For years, Tata Motors had enjoyed a comfortable lead, but Windsor’s disruptive pricing, advanced design, and modern features quickly shifted customer preference.

MG Windsor EV: A Star Performer

Launched in September 2024, the MG Windsor EV became an instant sensation. Within months, it surged ahead to record 19,394 units sold in 2025, staying India’s bestselling EV for nine consecutive months.

A major factor behind its success was the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model, which allowed customers to purchase the vehicle at a relatively low entry price of ₹12 lakh and then subscribe separately for the battery. This unique approach reduced upfront costs and appealed to price-sensitive buyers.

The Windsor comes with a 52.9 kWh battery pack, offering a range of up to 449 km on a single charge. With its modern infotainment system, sleek design, and spacious interiors, the Windsor quickly became a popular choice among young professionals and families. Analysts believe this all-round package was key to its ability to outshine Tata’s Nexon EV.

Tata Punch EV: Compact Yet Powerful

Securing second place was the Tata Punch EV, which sold 17,966 units in 2025. Compact and affordable, the Punch emerged as a favorite among middle-class households and first-time EV buyers.

It is available in 25 kWh and 35 kWh battery options, delivering a maximum range of 421 km. Its small size, affordability, and practical range made it ideal for city commutes and short weekend drives. The Punch EV also benefited from Tata’s rapidly expanding charging network, which boosted buyer confidence.

Tata Tiago EV: Popular in Smaller Cities

The Tata Tiago EV continued to perform strongly, securing third position with 17,145 units sold in 2025. Its popularity was especially high in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, where buyers prioritize affordability and low maintenance.

In August 2025 alone, Tata sold 5,250 units of the Tiago EV, showing 11% year-on-year growth. With its compact size, reliable performance, and budget-friendly pricing, the Tiago EV has become a trusted entry-level choice for families transitioning to electric mobility.

Tata Nexon EV: From Leader to Fourth

Once the undisputed leader of India’s EV market, the Tata Nexon EV slipped to fourth place in 2025. Despite selling 13,978 units this year, it could not keep pace with the Windsor’s rise.

The Nexon EV is offered in 30 kWh and 40.5 kWh battery pack options, providing a maximum range of 465 km. While its strong features and long range remain attractive, Windsor’s affordability and fresh design clearly won over a large portion of Nexon’s customer base. Experts suggest Tata will need to refresh the Nexon lineup to reclaim its leadership position.

MG Comet EV: The Urban-Friendly Choice

Rounding out the list is the MG Comet EV, which sold 10,149 units in 2025. With its compact design and quirky styling, the Comet positioned itself as a convenient city commuter and a popular second car for urban households.

Its modest 230 km range limits it to short-distance use, but affordability, ease of parking, and maneuverability in traffic make it appealing for city buyers. In August 2025 alone, Comet sales reached 1,113 units, marking an 18% month-on-month growth.

The Bigger Picture: A Fierce Rivalry

The 2025 rankings confirm one clear trend: India’s EV market is now dominated by a rivalry between MG Motor and Tata Motors. Tata still leads in terms of volume, with three cars in the top five, but MG’s Windsor EV disrupted the market narrative and set new benchmarks in affordability and performance.

Industry experts believe that affordability, design innovation, and charging infrastructure will be the decisive factors in future success. Both Tata and MG are rumored to be developing next-generation EVs featuring solid-state batteries and AI-driven technologies.

With government incentives, rapid charging infrastructure expansion, and rising environmental awareness, EV adoption in India is accelerating faster than expected. The success of the Windsor EV demonstrates that Indian buyers are ready to embrace new technologies, provided the price is right. As competition heats up, 2026 promises to bring even more excitement with fresh models and possibly new players entering the market.
