Ahmedabad, August 23, 2025: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across Gujarat over the next six days, with alerts issued for several regions including Saurashtra, South Gujarat, and North Gujarat. The forecast suggests that the state will continue to experience intense monsoon activity till August 29, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

On Saturday, red, orange, and yellow alerts were issued for different parts of the state depending on the severity of the expected rainfall. According to IMD officials, 27 districts are under heavy rainfall warning today (August 23). Among these, Sabarkantha, Navsari, and Valsad districts have been placed under a red alert, signaling the possibility of extremely heavy showers that could lead to flooding and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
In addition, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Tapi, Dang, and Junagadh districts are under orange alert, indicating a high likelihood of heavy to very heavy rain. Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been sounded across large parts of the state including Kutch, Patan, Banaskantha, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Kheda, Anand, Ahmedabad, Bharuch, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Dahod, Panchmahal, Narmada, Surat, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Gir Somnath, and Porbandar. The yellow alert signals a possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms.
Forecast for August 24–26
Between August 24 and 26, IMD forecasts suggest that multiple districts could witness intense spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Areas most likely to be affected include Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Kheda, Mahisagar, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Panchmahal, Dahod, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Gir Somnath, Navsari, and Valsad. Residents of these regions have been advised to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with weather advisories.
Authorities have also cautioned that rural and low-lying areas may face temporary flooding, while cities could see significant traffic disruptions, waterlogging, and potential damage to infrastructure.
Forecast for August 27–29
Looking further ahead, the IMD has extended its rainfall alerts till August 29, predicting continued monsoon activity in several parts of Gujarat. Districts such as Kutch, Banaskantha, Patan, Sabarkantha, Morbi, Jamnagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Navsari, and Valsad may experience heavy rainfall with thunderstorms during this period. A combination of yellow and orange alerts has been issued, highlighting the possibility of locally intense rainfall and isolated flooding incidents.
Preparedness Measures
Disaster management authorities across the state have been instructed to stay on standby for emergency situations, particularly in flood-prone districts. Urban civic bodies have been directed to ensure that stormwater drains remain clear to prevent major waterlogging. Similarly, rural administrations are monitoring rivers and dams that may swell due to continuous inflows.
The Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) has appealed to the public to exercise caution. Farmers have been advised to protect standing crops, particularly in regions where excess rainfall could damage cotton and groundnut harvests. Fishermen have also been warned against venturing into the sea during this period due to the likelihood of rough conditions along the Gujarat coastline.
Residents Advised to Stay Alert
The IMD has emphasized that while monsoon showers are beneficial for groundwater recharge and agriculture, the intensity and duration of rainfall in the coming days could lead to hazardous conditions. Citizens are advised to:
-
Avoid traveling through waterlogged areas.
-
Keep emergency supplies ready.
-
Follow official alerts and weather updates.
-
Take special care of children, elderly, and patients during heavy rainfall days.
