Surat, which is globally renowned for its diamond industry, is currently going through a serious recession. Traders here are grappling with mounting financial issues and the impact of the global downturn. Specifically, since Diwali, more than 75% of Surat’s natural diamond factories have shut down, leading to a growing sense of concern among traders.

Decline in Natural Diamond Purchases and the Rise of Lab-Grown Diamonds

A significant shift is occurring in Surat’s diamond industry. There has been a sharp decline in the purchase of natural diamonds, and lab-grown diamonds are becoming increasingly popular. The reason for this shift is that lab-grown diamonds are not only more affordable but also offer similar quality, which has attracted buyers. As a result, the natural diamond market is facing adverse effects.

Prolonged Recession Raises Questions About Industry Stability

According to Surat’s diamond traders, this recession is longer and more severe than usual. Normally, the diamond industry would recover within four to eight months during a recession, but this time, the downturn has persisted for over two years. Industry leader Damji Mavani stated that this is the first time a recession has lasted so long, and there has been no sign of recovery in the current business climate.

Global Crises Affecting Surat’s Diamond Industry

Surat’s diamond industry is highly dependent on the import of raw diamonds from overseas. Currently, global crises such as tensions between the US and Russia, trade sanctions, and economic recessions in European countries are heavily impacting the industry. These events have directly affected Surat’s diamond sector, making the situation even more challenging for businesses.

Raw Diamond Shortage and Struggling Traders

Surat’s traders are now facing a shortage of raw diamonds due to the ongoing recession. This shortage is preventing them from increasing production or expanding their businesses. Additionally, the decline in demand is negatively impacting their financial stability.

Future Prospects and New Pathways

In an attempt to recover, Surat’s traders have begun to adopt lab-grown diamonds as an alternative. This shift has helped mitigate some unemployment, but there is still no clear improvement in the situation for natural diamonds. Traders are considering new strategies to navigate through this recession, but the overall situation remains unstable.

Surat’s diamond industry is working hard to find its direction amidst global challenges and increasing competition, but it is difficult to predict how long it will take to recover from the ongoing recession and economic crisis.
