New Delhi: Political activity in Maharashtra has intensified over the cabinet expansion and allocation of portfolios. A high-level BJP meeting held in Delhi on Wednesday saw the participation of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and NCP leader Ajit Pawar. However, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde of the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) was notably absent, sparking speculation about his discontent.
According to sources, Devendra Fadnavis reached out to Shinde over the phone, attempting to persuade him to join discussions on cabinet expansion and portfolio distribution. BJP State President Chandrashekhar Bawankule was also sent to Shinde’s residence for further talks.
Reports suggest that Shinde is upset about not being given the Home Ministry. In response, the BJP has reportedly offered him the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Revenue Ministry instead.
Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar appears to be gaining from the ongoing political tension. Having already joined the Shinde government, Pawar is now seen as being close to the BJP. The BJP considers Pawar a practical leader, whereas Shinde is viewed as emotionally driven.
Sources indicate that Shinde’s faction is demanding at least 12 ministries, while the BJP wants to keep 20-22 ministries for itself.
This political situation poses a significant challenge for the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP. It remains to be seen how the allocation of ministries will shape up in the coming days.
