Solid Roof for a Tribal Family through the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme
Ambaben Kolgha, a resident of Gopala village in Mahuva taluka, Surat district, has witnessed her lifelong dream of owning a permanent home come true under the PM Janman Awas Yojana. A 54-year-old daily wage earner and cattle rearer, Ambaben shared her struggles of living in a dilapidated mud house for years. Monsoon rains would seep into their house, soaking belongings and forcing the family to sit through sleepless nights. Building a permanent house seemed like an unachievable dream given their limited income from agriculture labor.
However, the PM Janman Awas Yojana changed her life. “With the help of the government, our dreams of a permanent house have come true,” said Ambaben. She applied for the scheme under the guidance of local administrative officials and received financial assistance of ₹2 lakh in three installments: ₹50,000, ₹1.20 lakh, and ₹30,000. Additionally, she benefited from 90 days of employment under the MGNREGA scheme, earning ₹25,200.
Ambaben expressed her gratitude for the government’s support, stating, “The scheme has opened the doors to happiness for our family. We now have a home of our own, and living here brings unparalleled joy.”
Apart from the housing scheme, Ambaben also received benefits under the Ayushman Bharat health card, which ensures her family is financially prepared to face unforeseen medical emergencies. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has also been a blessing for her, as she no longer has to carry heavy firewood or deal with the harmful smoke of traditional chulhas. “The gas connection provided under this scheme has freed us from the burden of smoke and brought convenience to our daily lives,” she added.
The PM Janman Awas Yojana is part of a broader initiative by the government to uplift marginalized families, especially tribal communities. The scheme has brought transformative changes to the lives of many such families in Surat district, fulfilling their dream of a secure and dignified life.
