Australia Bans Social Media: Australia has made history by being the first country in the world to ban social media for the age group below 16. With the new law coming into force on Wednesday (December 10, 2025), everyone under 16 years of age is forbidden to use the mentioned platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. The government has been very strict by offering the world-wide ten major social media companies a choice of either blocking access for children or paying fines of A$49.5 million ($33 million) which will be imposed on them if they do not comply. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese branded the day as a day of pride for Australian families. He is quite sure that this law will serve as a barrier against young people getting involved in online harms which he acknowledges have outgrown the capabilities of the traditional safety measures. In the long run, the prime minister said the objective is to empower parents and at the same time lessen the control of big tech companies over children. The decision was criticized by tech firms and free-speech advocates but at the same time it was applauded by most parents and child safety groups. Besides announcing the new rule, the PM also made a video that will be played in schools where he encourages children to engage in different activities such as playing sports, music, reading etc. during the summer vacation which is just around the corner. This regulation has just come into effect after a long debate on the question of whether it is possible to keep children off social media in the digital world of today. The countries of Denmark, New Zealand, and Malaysia are now following Australia closely as it becomes the first true test of the limits that governments can impose on the use of age-gating without curtailing freedom of speech or hindering innovation.
