Emergency Landing at Surat Airport: Commandos Rescue Hostage Passengers
Surat, (Gujarat) [India]: A joint initiative by the Surat District Disaster Authority and Surat Airport Authority witnessed an anti-hijacking mock drill conducted at Surat Airport on Tuesday morning. The drill simulated a scenario where three terrorists hijacked a flight en route from Hyderabad to Sharjah, forcing an emergency landing at Surat Airport. The terrorists held passengers hostage, but vigilant Chetak Commandos and CISF personnel successfully apprehended the terrorists alive and rescued all the hostages.
The mock drill was conducted under the guidance of District Disaster Management Committee Chairman and Collector Dr. Saurabh Pardhi, with meticulous planning by the airport authority ensuring its success.
At 11:08 AM, the Surat Airport Authority received a report of a hijacked aircraft. Authorities promptly informed Surat City Police, District Collector, and Sub-Divisional Officers. The airport was immediately cordoned off by Surat Police and CISF teams.
Police Commissioner Mr. Anupam Singh Gehlot arrived at the airport and negotiated with the terrorists through the Anti-Hijacking Control Room. The terrorists demanded the release of their imprisoned associates arrested by ATS, a helicopter, and ₹200 crores. Ultimately, Chetak Commandos seized the opportunity, overpowering the terrorists and confiscating AK-47 rifles and other weapons.
During the search operation, all hostages were successfully rescued without any casualties. The freed passengers, who were traumatized by the ordeal, were provided with necessary medical treatment and psychological counseling at a medical isolation unit.
The drill also demonstrated coordinated efforts by district administration, city police, and airport authorities. A green corridor was established from the airport to the civil area, robust traffic management was ensured, and medical teams were deployed, making the mock drill seamless and efficient.
