A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Assam’s Udalguri district. No damage or injuries reported as tremors shake the region.
A 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Assam struck the Udalguri district early Thursday morning, causing panic among residents but leaving no reported casualties or property damage.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 6:47 AM IST, with its epicenter located near Udalguri, close to the Bhutan border. The quake was shallow, with a depth of 10 kilometers, which caused the tremors to be felt more strongly on the surface.
Residents in Udalguri, Darrang, Sonitpur, and neighboring districts reported feeling moderate tremors. Many people rushed out of their homes in fear, but authorities confirmed that no structural damage or injuries were reported.
Speaking to the media, a senior official from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said:
“Our teams were immediately deployed to assess the situation. Thankfully, there has been no loss of life or property reported so far.”
Assam lies in Seismic Zone V, which is highly prone to earthquakes due to its geographical location near the Himalayan tectonic plate boundary. Experts have advised residents to remain cautious, as aftershocks may occur in the coming hours.
The earthquake in Assam comes as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity, prompting officials to review disaster preparedness measures and ensure emergency response teams remain on high alert.
