Uttarkashi Cloudburst Triggers Massive Havoc; CM Dhami Reviews Situation, Army and NDRF Intensify Rescue

Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand: A devastating cloudburst in Uttarkashi district has caused large-scale destruction, sweeping away houses, hotels, and roads in Dharali and surrounding areas. The sudden deluge occurred around 1:45 PM on Tuesday, leading to flash floods and heavy debris flow that buried multiple homes. Many bridges and roads have been washed away, making rescue operations extremely challenging. Officials have confirmed the death of four people, while several others remain missing. The disaster has also injured a number of Army personnel, including Agniveer recruits, during rescue efforts.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami immediately reached Uttarkashi to take stock of the situation. He stated, “So far, Army personnel have rescued nearly 190 people about 120 from the right side of Dharali and 70 from the left.” Rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing by multiple agencies including the Army, ITBP, NDRF, SDRF, police, and the revenue department. Helicopters, drones, and advanced equipment have been deployed to aid the evacuation of stranded individuals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured full assistance from the Centre, emphasizing that all possible measures are being taken to ensure quick relief and rehabilitation. Authorities have urged people in low-lying areas to stay alert, as continuous rainfall poses a high risk of further landslides and flash floods. The state disaster management teams are closely monitoring the situation.

Uttarakhand has a history of extreme weather events, and experts have noted a rise in cloudburst incidents in recent years. The ongoing rescue operations highlight the vulnerability of hill states to natural calamities and the pressing need for improved disaster preparedness.
