Surat, (Gujarat) [India]: As global warming intensifies and the world faces severe energy shortages, pollution remains a major concern. In response, countries around the globe are increasingly turning to renewable energy. In line with this, the Gujarat government is making strides towards its ‘Green Gujarat’ goal by improving power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. To encourage residential electricity consumers to adopt solar energy, both central and state governments have implemented the PM Sury Ghar Free Electricity Scheme. One notable beneficiary of this scheme is Sunilbhai Z. Patil from Mandvi Taluka in Surat District, who has completely eliminated his household electricity bill by harnessing solar energy.

The environmentally-conscious Patil family installed a 4 kW solar rooftop panel on their bungalow in P.N. Park Society, Mandvi. This move has helped them tap into renewable solar energy and has resulted in zero electricity bills.

Sunilbhai Patil expressed his delight in not having to worry about electricity expenses. “Installing solar panels is full of benefits. It’s a one-time investment that gives you electricity for a lifetime. In 2020, I installed a 4 kW solar panel, which cost Rs. 1.61 lakh, with Rs. 40,000 provided as a government subsidy. Since then, our electricity bill for household appliances like the TV, fridge, and AC has become zero. Our household, which previously consumed around 2,500 units annually, now generates approximately 3,500 units using solar energy. We no longer worry about electricity bills, and it feels great to contribute to environmental preservation by using pollution-free solar energy,” Sunilbhai shared.

He further explained that any excess electricity generated can be sold for additional income. Previously, his household received a bi-monthly electricity bill of Rs. 2,500, which is now zero. On top of that, they have earned Rs. 15,000 to 20,000 in credit by selling surplus energy. According to Sunilbhai, the cost of the solar system can be recovered in just 4 to 5 years, especially with the help of government subsidies.

Seasonal Variations in Solar Energy Production

Sunilbhai noted that solar energy production varies by season. During summer, with longer daylight hours, around 20 units are produced daily with a 4 kW system. In winter, production decreases to 10 to 15 units, and during the monsoon, cloudy conditions reduce output to 7 to 8 units per day.

Maintenance Tip for Optimal Solar Performance

To keep the solar system functioning efficiently, the only requirement is regular cleaning. Sunilbhai suggests cleaning the panels with water every week. Additionally, modern systems allow the installation of mini sprinklers, making cleaning more convenient and keeping the system in top condition.

Through solar energy, Sunilbhai Patil has not only eliminated his electricity bills but is also earning income while contributing to a cleaner, greener future.
