OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Go in India at ₹399/month: Enhanced GPT-5 Features and Regional Language Support
In a major push to expand its AI services in India, OpenAI has officially launched a new subscription tier called ChatGPT Go, specifically tailored for Indian users. Priced affordably at just ₹399 per month, the plan introduces a host of powerful features previously available only in higher-tier subscriptions, now made accessible at a lower cost to cater to the fast-growing user base in the country.
The launch of ChatGPT Go comes amid growing AI adoption in India across educational, professional, and creative domains. The plan includes access to OpenAI’s latest flagship model, GPT-5, offering improved performance, faster response times, and better contextual understanding. One of the key highlights of this plan is enhanced support for regional Indian languages, addressing the needs of the diverse linguistic population of the country.
Alongside these improvements, ChatGPT Go subscribers will benefit from increased message limits, the ability to generate images using DALL·E, upload and analyze files, and retain chat memory for improved personalization. These features position ChatGPT Go as a mid-range option between the existing free tier and the more expensive ChatGPT Plus (₹1,999/month) and ChatGPT Pro (₹19,900/month) plans.
OpenAI’s Commitment to India’s Digital Growth
According to Nick Turley, Vice President of OpenAI and Head of ChatGPT, “We are inspired by the fact that millions of people in India are using ChatGPT every day to learn, work, create, and solve problems. This plan is our way of making powerful AI tools more affordable and useful for Indian users.”
The company has also introduced UPI (Unified Payments Interface) as a payment option, aligning with the country’s widely adopted digital transaction ecosystem. This makes subscribing even more convenient for users who prefer domestic payment methods.
This strategic move highlights OpenAI’s increasing focus on the Indian market, which has seen exponential growth in AI tool adoption. During the launch of GPT-5 earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that India had become the second-largest market globally for ChatGPT, and predicted it could soon overtake others to become the top market for the company, given the rapid pace of growth and digital infrastructure.
India-Centric Strategy and Local Data Storage
As part of OpenAI’s broader India-first approach, the company announced in May that data from Indian users of ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and OpenAI’s API platform would now be stored within India. This ensures better compliance with local data protection regulations and reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to serving Indian users.
Altman had previously hinted during his visit to India in February that OpenAI would be launching India-specific products and services. The arrival of ChatGPT Go is likely one of the first steps in this direction, and more localized solutions are expected in the future.
India’s ChatGPT User Base to Triple in 2024
During his India visit, Altman mentioned that the number of ChatGPT users in India is projected to triple by the end of 2024. This staggering growth is driven by India’s tech-savvy population, increasing smartphone penetration, and growing interest in AI-powered productivity tools.
Whether it’s students seeking homework help, developers building AI-integrated applications, marketers generating content, or teachers crafting lesson plans — ChatGPT has become a versatile tool for millions. With a lower entry price and improved features, ChatGPT Go is set to attract an even broader audience.
A Competitive Offering in the Subscription Market
With other players in the AI chatbot space also targeting India, OpenAI’s introduction of an affordable and feature-rich plan gives it a competitive edge. The inclusion of GPT-5, file handling, image generation, and improved language capabilities at a fraction of the previous cost could prove to be a game-changer in user acquisition and retention.
For now, ChatGPT Go is exclusive to Indian users and is available via the ChatGPT app and website. Interested users can subscribe directly using UPI, making it easier than ever to access advanced AI tools for daily use.
