Rare Conjunction of Saturday and Janmashtami: Worship Lord Krishna and Shani Dev Together – Simple Rituals and Abhishek Guide

Date: August 15, 2025 :Tomorrow, August 16, devotees across India will celebrate Shri Krishna Janmashtami, marking the divine appearance of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to scriptures, during the Dwapara Yuga, Lord Vishnu took birth as Shri Krishna on the Ashtami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Shravan. At the time of his birth, it was Ashtami Tithi, Rohini Nakshatra, and the Moon was in Taurus (Vrishabha Rashi).

This year’s Janmashtami holds special spiritual significance as it coincides with Saturday, a day dedicated to Lord Shani Dev. Astrologers believe that this rare conjunction offers devotees a unique opportunity to worship both Lord Krishna and Shani Dev for blessings, protection, and prosperity.

Significance of Abhishek on Janmashtami

Ujjain-based astrologer Pandit Manish Sharma suggests that performing the Abhishek (ritual bathing) of Lord Krishna in his child form, Laddu Gopal, is highly auspicious on this day. For this sacred ritual, devotees are advised to use a Dakshinavarti Shankh (right-turned conch shell).

Step-by-Step Guide for Janmashtami Puja and Abhishek

  • Use saffron-mixed milk for the Abhishek of Laddu Gopal. Adding saffron turns the milk a golden hue, symbolizing purity and divine energy.

  • Offer raw milk during the puja, along with prayers to Mother Yashoda, Balram, Radha, Kamadhenu (holy cow), and Govardhan Parvat — all closely associated with Lord Krishna.

  • Prepare offerings of Makhan-Mishri (butter and sugar), sweets, and seasonal fruits. Tulsi leaves are a must in the offerings.

  • If possible, take a holy bath in the Yamuna River on this day. If not feasible, add Yamuna water or Ganga water to your bathing water at home and chant the names of these sacred rivers to gain similar merit.

Worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi

On Janmashtami, it is also recommended to worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Use the Dakshinavarti Shankh for their Abhishek as well. According to Hindu belief, the conch is considered the brother of Goddess Lakshmi because both emerged from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan.

  • Fill the conch with milk and perform Abhishek for the deities.

  • Dress the idols in bright yellow garments, apply sandalwood tilak, adorn them with peacock feathers, crowns, garlands, and fresh flowers.

  • Offer Makhan-Mishri, sweets, Tulsi leaves, incense, and perform Aarti.

  • Chant the mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” at least 108 times using a Tulsi mala.

  • Read or listen to the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, Gita Saar, and Harivansh Purana.

Worship of Lord Shiva on Janmashtami

It is also considered auspicious to worship Lord Shiva on Janmashtami.

  • Perform Abhishek of the Shiva Linga with milk and water.

  • Apply sandalwood paste and decorate with Bilva leaves, Dhatura flowers, Aak flowers, and roses.

  • Offer sweets and seasonal fruits, light incense and lamps, and chant “Om Namah Shivaya”.

Donating money, grains, clothes, footwear, umbrellas, and other essentials on Janmashtami is highly meritorious. Specially, donating money and fodder to a cowshed (Gaushala) and feeding green grass to cows brings immense blessings.

Special Shani Dev Puja for Janmashtami Falling on Saturday

Since this year Janmashtami falls on a Saturday, special worship of Lord Shani Dev is advised:

  • Perform Abhishek with mustard oil.

  • Offer blue flowers, black sesame seeds, black clothes, and black urad dal to Shani Dev.

  • Chant the mantra “Om Sham Shanishcharaya Namah” to seek relief from hardships and planetary afflictions.

  • Donate oil to the needy as a symbolic act of humility and compassion.

Hanuman Ji Worship for Protection

On this day, lighting a lamp in front of Lord Hanuman and reciting the Hanuman Chalisa and Sundarkand is also considered beneficial. Devotees can also chant “Om Ramdootaya Namah” to invite courage and protection.

This rare combination of Janmashtami on a Saturday is believed to remove obstacles, bring prosperity, and strengthen spiritual devotion. By honoring both Lord Krishna and Lord Shani Dev, devotees can receive divine blessings for peace, health, and success in all aspects of life.
