- Strict enforcement to make Indore beggar-free
- Female beggar collected ₹75,000 within 10-12 days by begging
In a significant move to make Indore beggar-free, the district administration has announced strict action against those giving alms to beggars. Starting January 1, 2025, individuals caught giving money to beggars will face FIRs (First Information Reports) being filed against them.
Indore District Collector Ashish Singh stated that the administration had previously issued an order banning begging in the city. He emphasized that a public awareness campaign will continue until the end of December to educate citizens about this decision. “From January 1, if anyone is found giving alms, legal action will be taken against them. I urge the people of Indore not to become accomplices to this issue by encouraging begging,” said the Collector.
He further added that over the past few months, the administration has exposed several gangs that force individuals into begging and has rehabilitated many of those involved.
It is noteworthy that the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched a pilot project to make ten cities across the country beggar-free, with Indore being one of them. Recently, joint teams of the police and district administration apprehended 14 beggars in Indore. During this operation near the Rajwada Shani Temple, a female beggar was found with ₹75,000 in cash, which she had collected by begging over just 10-12 days.
This initiative aims to curb organized begging and provide rehabilitation to those forced into such circumstances, ensuring Indore becomes a beggar-free city.
