Imran Khan Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize for the Second Time: Recognized for Promoting Human Rights; Imprisoned Since 2023

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been in prison since 2023, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the second time.

He has been nominated for his efforts in promoting human rights and democracy in Pakistan.

The announcement was made by the Pakistan World Alliance (PWA), which is affiliated with the Norwegian political party Partiet Sentrum.

The nomination comes while Imran Khan remains incarcerated on charges of misusing national treasury funds.

Previously, in 2019, he was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in reducing tensions with India.

Nomination Announced on Sunday

On Sunday, Partiet Sentrum posted on X:
“We are pleased to announce, on behalf of Partiet Sentrum and those with the right to nominate, that we have nominated former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, for the Nobel Peace Prize.”

Previously Nominated in 2019

Imran Khan was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 for his efforts in de-escalating tensions with India. His nomination followed the Balakot airstrike, during which he made efforts to prevent further conflict. A resolution in support of his nomination was even presented in the Pakistani Parliament.

338 Nominations for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

For the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, a total of 338 nominations have been received, comprising 244 individuals and 94 organizations. Last year, 286 candidates were nominated, while the record for the highest number of nominations was set in 2016, with 376. The deadline for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize nominations was January 31.

Nobel Committee Keeps Nominations Confidential for 50 Years

According to the Nobel Prize website, the names of nominees remain confidential for 50 years. Imran Khan’s nomination has been publicly disclosed by the organization that proposed his name.

Imran Khan Imprisoned in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi

Imran Khan has been held in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail since 2023. In January 2025, a Pakistani court sentenced him to 14 years in prison for allegedly causing a loss of 50 billion Pakistani rupees to the national treasury.

He was arrested on May 9, 2023, in connection with this case. Following his arrest, several key military installations across Pakistan were attacked.
