Due to climate change, the production of Kashmir’s key crops, such as apples and saffron, is facing significant challenges. The changing climate has led to a noticeable decrease in rainfall in the region.
According to available data, saffron production in Kashmir, which was approximately 16 tons in 1997-98, declined to only 3.48 tons by 2021-22. Additionally, the area used for saffron cultivation decreased from 5,700 hectares to 3,700 hectares. Saffron crops require adequate rainfall, but extended dry periods in summer have caused a reduction in yields. Similar effects have been observed on apple crops as well.
Kashmir produces about 80% of India’s apples, but recent heatwaves and early snowfall have adversely affected apple production. The apple market in Jammu and Kashmir is valued at around ₹8,000 crore.
Heatwaves have impacted the color, size, and overall growth of apples, leading to a reduction in their market value. Sources from the horticulture department have noted a decline in the production of high-quality apples in the region. The alarming decrease in rainfall highlights the serious impact of climate change on Jammu and Kashmir, as local traders in Kashmir have observed.
