Gujarat’s Ageing Bridges Pose Deadly Threat: 13 Dead in Collapse, Dozens More in Disrepair
Public Safety in Jeopardy as Crumbling Infrastructure Exposed
In a tragic incident that has once again highlighted the alarming condition of Gujarat’s infrastructure, a 40-year-old bridge connecting Mujpur village in Padra Taluka (Vadodara district) and Gambhira village (Anand district) collapsed suddenly. The bridge, which also linked Central Gujarat to Saurashtra, gave way as the span between two pillars broke apart with a loud crash, causing vehicles to plunge into the Mahi River. At least 13 people lost their lives in the accident. The bridge, long neglected, was in a severely dilapidated condition.
Old, Risky Bridges Across Gujarat Under Scrutiny
Following this tragic collapse, concerns have grown over the safety of several ageing and weakened bridges across the state. According to data presented by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in the Rajya Sabha, 28 old bridges in Gujarat are currently under repair or reconstruction. However, the government has not disclosed the total number of dangerous or high-risk bridges, raising questions about transparency and public safety.

Temporary Fixes in Surat Raise Red Flags
In Surat’s Kamrej area, the bridge over the Tapi River on National Highway 48 has been damaged for the past two years. Instead of a proper structural fix, metal plates have been placed over cracks as a temporary solution. The bridge handles heavy traffic round the clock, yet no permanent repair work has been initiated by local authorities.
Half-Century-Old Valsad Bridge Closed to Heavy Vehicles
In Valsad district, a bridge in Karanjveri village on the Vapi-Shamlaji National Highway has recently been closed to heavy vehicles due to safety concerns. The bridge, which is over 50 years old, has deteriorated significantly. Despite repeated appeals from residents over the past six years, the government has failed to take decisive action.
