Google has released a fix addressing the ‘untrusted device’ error that recently affected Chromecast (2nd Gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. The issue, which surfaced around March 9, 2025, was caused by an expired intermediate Certificate Authority (CA), leading to authentication failures that prevented users from casting content.
Users reported that their devices suddenly stopped working, displaying an “Untrusted device” message, preventing them from connecting to streaming platforms. This caused widespread frustration, particularly for those who rely on Chromecast for home entertainment and smart home integration.
To resolve the issue, Google has rolled out an update through the Google Home app. The latest versions—3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS—restore Chromecast functionality by updating device security credentials. Google advises users to keep their devices connected to the internet to automatically receive the update.
However, users who performed a factory reset before the fix was deployed may still face difficulties in setting up their devices. Google has acknowledged this and is working on further solutions to address these cases. Updates will be provided on the official Google Nest Community page.
The fix is expected to be fully deployed within a few days, ensuring Chromecast users can resume streaming without further disruptions.
