Surat: While Diwali is a festival symbolizing joy, lights, and celebrations, this year, it has brought serious concerns for the residents of Surat. Over the past 10 days, Surat’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached a hazardous level of 281, making it the most polluted city in Gujarat. This situation poses a significant health risk for locals and may lead to severe respiratory issues.

Pollution from Firecrackers:

As every year, firecracker usage during Diwali saw a significant increase, leading to a spike in airborne pollutants. Between October 24 and November 3, Surat’s AQI remained between 201 and 300, which is considered “poor” according to the World Health Organization (WHO) standards. This level of pollution is particularly harmful for people with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Ahmedabad Also Affected:

Alongside Surat, Ahmedabad recorded an AQI of 231 on October 26. Diwali preparations, crowded markets, and an increase in vehicular movement contributed to worsening pollution levels. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), these figures are average readings, meaning some areas could be experiencing even higher pollution levels.

Dense Fog Signals Increased Pollution:

Following Diwali, a thick layer of fog covered Surat in the morning, another indication of rising air pollution. In colder weather, harmful particles in the air increase in density, reducing visibility and posing serious health risks. Experts warn that such conditions can lead to severe lung and respiratory issues.

Health Experts Advise Caution:

Health experts recommend that during winter, especially on foggy mornings, people should wear masks when going outdoors. This precaution will not only reduce the risk of respiratory diseases but also help protect overall public health.

This Diwali, as people enjoy fireworks, it is equally important to consider the impact on health. With rising pollution levels in Surat, everyone should stay vigilant and work towards keeping the environment safe. It is crucial for both local authorities and citizens to collaborate in tackling this pollution crisis, ensuring that future celebrations can take place in a clean and healthy atmosphere.
