New Delhi, April 9, 2025: Amidst escalating temperatures, Delhi’s power demand soared to a season-high of 5,029 megawatts (MW) on Tuesday afternoon. This peak was recorded at 3:30 PM, as per the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC).

The surge is attributed to the intensified heatwave gripping the capital, leading residents to increasingly rely on cooling appliances. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended a yellow alert for Delhi, forecasting continued heatwave conditions.

In response to the rising demand, power distribution companies (discoms) have implemented measures to ensure uninterrupted supply. Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL) successfully managed a peak demand of 1,585 MW in its service areas on Tuesday. The company credited its Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and long-term power procurement strategies for maintaining reliable service.

Looking ahead, officials anticipate that Delhi’s power demand may escalate further, potentially reaching 9,000 MW during the peak summer months. This projection underscores the necessity for ongoing enhancements to the city’s power infrastructure and supply strategies.

Residents are advised to adopt energy-efficient practices to mitigate the strain on the power grid and contribute to a more sustainable energy consumption pattern during the sweltering summer months.
