Delhi Smog: Delhi is facing a serious health concern as doctors report a 60% rise in eye problems due to the thick blanket of toxic smog covering the city after Deepavali. Ophthalmologists say that pollution levels have reached dangerous levels, causing a surge in cases of eye allergies, dryness, burning, and watering among both adults and children. Dr. Ikeda Lal from Delhi Eye Centre and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said that every year after Deepavali, complaints of itching, redness, and irritation go up by nearly 50–60%. He explained that the mix of pollution, dust, and chemicals from firecrackers is extremely harmful to the eyes, especially for people already suffering from dry eye issues.

Dr. Rajesh Sinha from AIIMS also reported a similar 50% rise in patients experiencing gritty or heavy eyes, which are symptoms of pollution-induced eye allergies. He warned that tiny particles (PM2.5 and PM10) in the air can settle on the eye surface, damage the tear film, and lead to infections or temporary vision problems if ignored. Doctors said pollutants like nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide react with the moisture in the eyes, causing inflammation and chemical irritation.

Experts advise people to avoid contact lenses and heavy eye makeup, use lubricating drops, wear protective glasses, and wash eyes regularly. They also recommend staying indoors during peak smog hours and using air purifiers. Children and the elderly are most vulnerable — children due to outdoor play, and seniors due to reduced tear production. Doctors warn that ignoring symptoms can cause long-term corneal damage and stress that protecting eyes is as important as protecting lungs during this pollution season.
