Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced that Azadpur, New Delhi, and Lajpat Nagar Metro stations will soon handle the additional responsibility of being triple interchange hubs. Currently, there is only one Metro station in Delhi, which is Kashmere Gate, through which three lines pass.
With the inclusion of these three stations in the Delhi Metro project’s Phase IV, commuters will be able to change lines at the same station for three different metro lines. According to the report, this will be a significant enhancement in the transport system of the city because the city has not seen any change in its transport system in nearly two decades; it has been left with only one ‘triple interchange station’.
At present, there are 29 interchange stations on the Delhi Metro, of which only Kashmere Gate is a three-line interchange station, connecting lines Red, Yellow, and Violet. In Phase IV, Azadpur will connect Yellow, Pink, and Magenta lines, making travel easier between North, West, and South Delhi. Sources with the DMRC stated that Azadpur is scheduled to be made operational by the end of 2026 as a three-line interchange station.
Another important node is going to be the New Delhi Metro station, where the Yellow Line, Airport Express Line, and Green Line are going to be connected. This is going to provide easy connectivity to and from the airport and Central and Western Delhi.
Lajpat Nagar also improves connectivity across the city by integrating three corridors. This will enhance the efficiency of travel for commuters.
Moreover, the government in Delhi has also sanctioned the Phase V (A) Metro Project, through which Central Secretariat would also be turned into a triple interchange point. After this, there would be five such triple interchange points for the Delhi Metro.
