Frankfurt (Germany), September 25, 2024 – In a bid to combat deforestation, Continental has teamed up with the nature restoration company Land Life to develop an innovative tree-seeding robot. The robot, capable of sowing one tree seed per minute, aims to offer an efficient and sustainable solution for reforestation in regions affected by environmental degradation. With the ability to plant up to 60 pits per hour, this technology represents a significant advancement in ecological restoration.

Continental Engineering Services (CES), Continental’s engineering provider, has partnered with Land Life to introduce this robot to the market. Land Life, a global leader in reforestation projects, brings its extensive expertise in nature restoration, while CES has developed the automated drilling and seeding module for this project. The robot vehicle, manufactured by Stella Engineering, serves as the automated driving unit.

A Critical Solution to Growing Deforestation

A recent report from the World Resources Institute (WRI) revealed a 24% increase in global forest loss in 2023, highlighting the urgency of reforestation efforts. Tropical rainforest loss was particularly severe, with around 3.7 million hectares disappearing in 2023. This loss has serious consequences for biodiversity, climate regulation, and carbon storage.

Conventional reforestation methods are often challenging, particularly in hard-to-reach areas. The tree-seeding robot offers a practical and innovative solution for restoring forests in difficult terrains, making it a crucial tool in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss.

Automotive Expertise Driving Sustainable Restoration

“Our collaboration with Land Life will strengthen biodiversity and expand natural ecosystems,” said Martin Poettcher, Head of Business Center GreenTech at CES. “We have adapted our proven automotive technology to ensure the robot can operate safely and efficiently, even in rugged terrain.”

The robot’s fully automated sowing process includes removing ground cover, drilling the perfect hole for the seed, and dropping a seed ball into the ground, all within less than a minute. The entire system is designed to ensure precise, high-quality seeding even in tough environmental conditions.

A Global Impact on Reforestation

The seeding robot is designed to operate in a variety of challenging terrains, from rocky slopes to sandy soils, ensuring that native seeds are planted with precision. It can handle extreme weather conditions, strong winds, dust, and temperature fluctuations, making it an invaluable tool for large-scale reforestation projects worldwide.

CES and the Future of Green Technology

CES is increasingly focused on developing green technologies to protect the environment. The company’s GreenTech division is dedicated to creating innovative solutions like AI-powered energy-efficient systems and ecological weed management technology. The tree-seeding robot represents a significant step toward restoring ecosystems and ensuring a sustainable future for our planet.
