In the upcoming Vav Assembly by-election in Banaskantha district, Congress has announced its candidate. Voting will take place on November 13, with counting scheduled for November 23. After extensive deliberation, Congress has chosen former Tharad MLA, Gulab Singh Rajput, as its candidate for the Vav seat. The nomination process will commence today at an auspicious time.

Congress Selection Process

The selection process on Monday included AICC Secretary Subhashini Yadav, former MLA Baldevji Thakor, and former MLA Chandanji Thakor, who consulted with potential candidates. Eight contenders presented their applications for the ticket, with Gulab Singh Rajput ultimately securing the nomination.

Background of Gulab Singh Rajput

Gulab Singh Rajput’s friendship with Ganiben Thakor has played a significant role in his political journey. In 2019, he was elected as an MLA from the Tharad Assembly seat in a by-election, but he lost to Shankar Chaudhary in the 2022 Assembly election. He also played a pivotal role in supporting Ganiben Thakor’s victory in the Lok Sabha election.

Other Potential Candidates

Besides Gulab Singh Rajput, other prominent contenders included Thakarsi Rabari and K.P. Gadhvi. Thakarsi Rabari, a leader from the Maldhari community, has been actively working at the grassroots level for the past decade and also contributed significantly to Ganiben’s victory.

Political Dynamics of the Vav Seat

The Vav Assembly seat holds significant influence from the Thakor and Chaudhary communities. Whichever party secures support from these communities tends to have a better chance of winning. The seat was vacated due to Ganiben Thakor’s victory in the Lok Sabha, necessitating this by-election.

Conclusion

Congress aims to reclaim the Vav seat through this by-election. With Gulab Singh Rajput’s nomination, the party has taken a decisive step toward that goal. Election preparations are expected to gain momentum, with all eyes on the November 13 vote.
