Rajkot: On the occasion of World Cancer Day, February 4, 2024, the Cancer Care Foundation has announced an extraordinary kayaking expedition. This adventure will see cancer warriors from around the world embark on a 250 km journey from Dwarka to Somnath, making it the first time that cancer survivors will participate in such a challenging sea kayaking activity.
According to the foundation, the primary goal of this expedition is to inspire cancer survivors and encourage them to embrace life after cancer. The event aims to send a powerful message that cancer can be conquered. Registration for the event is open until November 20, and it is free of charge.
Testing the Physical and Mental Strength of Cancer Warriors
Bunkim Joshi, Secretary of the Rajkot District Swimming Association, explained that the cancer warriors will first undergo 500-meter swimming training in a pool. After that, they will be trained in kayaking and swimming in open water. Their physical and mental fitness will be assessed before the expedition to ensure that they are capable of kayaking the 250 km distance.
Cancer Awareness Camps Along the Route
During the kayaking journey, 30 cancer awareness camps will be set up in coastal villages between Dwarka and Somnath. These camps will offer free mammograms and HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccinations, which are crucial for the prevention of cervical cancer.
Registration Details: 12 Registrations So Far, Participants Expected from 20 Countries
So far, 12 cancer warriors have registered for the event, with participants expected from countries like Canada, the UK, and from various Indian states such as Odisha and Maharashtra. Ashwin Solanki, President of the Cancer Care Foundation, stated that the aim of this event is to fill cancer survivors with enthusiasm and give them a renewed sense of purpose and recognition within society.
Foundation’s Journey and Mission
The Cancer Care Foundation was founded in 2019 by Ashwin Solanki, who himself was diagnosed with cancer. After undergoing radiation and chemotherapy, Solanki was inspired to start activities to encourage cancer warriors, such as yoga, meditation camps, and seminars. Last year, he organized a fashion show and garba event for cancer warriors, which is in the process of being included in the Guinness World Records.
Launch of Books on Cancer Prevention and Stories of Cancer Warriors
To further raise awareness about cancer, a book on cancer prevention and the journeys of cancer warriors, titled Kintsugi Tales, was launched by Morari Bapu. The book features the inspiring stories of 28 cancer survivor sisters. Another book, Addiction Is Cancer, chronicles the struggles of individuals battling both addiction and cancer.
This remarkable event serves not only as a physical challenge but as a profound symbol of hope, strength, and determination for cancer warriors across the globe.
